Artist Statement
I have long been interested in the space between observation and interpretation. Rather than simply describing what I see, I use observation as a starting point.
Across painting, drawing, and sculpture, the work develops through process. One decision suggests another; materials and marks redirect the work; forms appear, disappear, and change. I move between the recognizable and the abstract without entirely predetermining where the work will end.
My background in sculpture continues to influence how I approach painting. I think through weight, surface, gesture, and physical form, whether working with bronze, stone, wax, paint, or drawing materials. Increasingly, ideas and processes from one medium carry into another.
I am interested in what happens when looking moves beyond recognition toward something sensed rather than simply described.
About the Artist
Jami Nix Rahn is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, drawing, and painting.
Raised in a military family, Rahn developed an early awareness of movement and changing environments. She began her professional training in Portugal through apprenticeships in stone carving and bronze casting. She continued her work while living in Geneva, Switzerland, and São Paulo, Brazil.
After returning to the United States, Rahn studied portraiture in oil and pastel with Daniel E. Greene and continued her training at the Art Students League in New York. She later earned her BFA in painting from Florida Atlantic University.
Since relocating to Colorado, landscape has become an important focus of her painting. She works primarily in oil and cold wax, continuing a practice shaped by her earlier experience in drawing and sculpture.
Her work has been exhibited in the United States and abroad and is held in public and private collections.
