Artist Statement
My work begins with observation and the questions that follow. I am drawn to people, places, and experiences that suggest something beyond what is immediately apparent.
I work in painting, drawing, and sculpture, moving between representation and abstraction. I don't consider one approach more meaningful than another. Each subject offers different possibilities, and I choose materials and style based on what the subject demands.
I am interested in what a work can say beyond what it depicts.
About the Artist
Jami Nix Rahn (b. Corpus Christi, Texas) is a multidisciplinary artist whose career spans several decades. Working in painting, drawing, and sculpture, she explores portraiture, the human figure, urban scenes, and landscapes, moving between representation and abstraction.
Her work begins with observation and an interest in what a subject might suggest beyond its immediate appearance. This engagement informs her choice of materials and approach, allowing each work to develop on its own terms.
Raised in a military family, Rahn developed an early awareness of movement and changing environments. Throughout her life, the places she has lived have continued to influence her observations, interests, and artistic direction. She began her professional training in Portugal through apprenticeships in stone carving and bronze casting. She continued her artistic practice while living in Geneva, Switzerland, and São Paulo, Brazil.
After returning to the United States, Rahn studied portraiture in oil and pastel with Daniel E. Greene. She studied with John Hultberg and Richard C. Pionk at the Art Students League in New York, and with Peter Paone at the National Academy. She later earned her BFA in painting from Florida Atlantic University.
Rahn's early career included a solo exhibition at the American Ambassador's Residence in Lisbon, followed by representation with Galeria Sesimbra in Lisbon. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and abroad, including at the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the Naples Museum of Art in Florida, and is held in private collections. She lives and works in Colorado's Rocky Mountains.
